What is The Field Weekly?
The Field Weekly is an independent editorial publication covering Indian sports. Each issue collects deep-analysis stories on a week's developments across chess, athletics, wrestling, football, and other disciplines — not match reports or press-release summaries.
Why does The Field Weekly exist?
Because India produces extraordinary individual sporting talent in dozens of disciplines, and the public conversation around almost all of it lasts about a week every four years. A wrestler wins an Olympic medal, gets a news cycle, and the akhada that built her disappears from coverage again until the next Games. We exist to keep that conversation running in the weeks that aren't an Olympics, a World Cup, or a controversy.
Isn't Indian sport already covered enough?
Cricket is. Almost everything else is registered only when there's a medal, and forgotten within days even then — and of what does stick, it's usually one or two other sports during a marquee win, not the discipline itself. Chess, wrestling, athletics, badminton, kabaddi, para-sport, and dozens more largely exist in the gap between major tournaments. That gap is where we operate.
Why are you deliberately biased toward the athlete?
Because Indian sports coverage defaults to the federation's press release, the board's official line, the administrator's quote — and the athlete becomes a subject in someone else's story about themselves. We start from the athlete's effort, risk, and circumstance, and hold institutions accountable to that, not the other way around. We think that's a more honest place to start, not a less rigorous one.
Why call it 'discourse,' not just reporting?
A results ticker isn't analysis. We're not trying to break news faster than wire services — we're trying to ask why: why a federation keeps failing the same discipline, why a training method works, why a comeback does or doesn't. That's the follow-up question Indian sports media rarely circles back to once the medal ceremony ends.
How often does it publish?
A new issue publishes roughly weekly. Each issue is a dated collection of stories; past issues remain permanently accessible in the archive.
Who writes the stories?
Stories are credited to The Editorial Board or a named contributor covering a specific beat — see the Contributors page. Every piece reflects independent editorial judgment, not a federation's talking points or wire copy; see our editorial policy for details.
Can I cite or quote The Field Weekly?
Yes. Short quotations with a link back to the original story URL are welcome for journalism and research. Each story has a stable, permanent URL and a published date in its byline.
